Microsoft builds Taiwan data center in Sino-US technology war
Taipei-Microsoft will build the first cloud computing data center in Taiwan and transform it into a major Asian operations center to make the largest investment in Taiwan.
The American software giant said that the company invests $1 billion in data and network security each year and will also cooperate with Taiwan to enhance the security of the electronic supply chain.
Sun Jian, general manager of Microsoft Taiwan, said at the press conference: "This is a very important day for Microsoft, because this is our largest investment in Taiwan in the past 31 years." "Taiwan is a reliable partner of Microsoft because It has a complete information technology supply chain and a wealth of talents. We also see opportunities for cross-industry cooperation with semiconductors, telecommunications, medical and other industries."
Microsoft said its Azure cloud computing business plan will help create 30,000 direct and indirect jobs in Taiwan, and create an economic value of approximately NT$300 billion (approximately US$10.5 billion) by 2024.
The announcement of the American software giant came one month after Google announced that it would build its third data center in Taiwan. Taiwan is a democratically ruled island. China regards it as part of its territory and does not rule out the use of force to take over Taiwan. Google said the island’s geographic location is strategically suitable for the Asian data transmission center.

Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen said at a press conference that when the supply chain was reorganized, “Microsoft’s investment marked a deeper level of cooperation between the United States and Taiwan”. "Taiwan has an irreplaceable advantage in high-end hardware manufacturing. We are a reliable and safe partner for the United States and other developed countries. Microsoft's investment is essential for us to strengthen cooperation with the international community and the United States."
Taiwan is seeking to maintain friendly relations with the United States. With the escalating technological conflict between the world's two largest economic powers, Taiwan will hold a presidential election within a week.
The Trump administration has launched an aggressive campaign to stop China’s technological advancement and requires global suppliers to reduce their dependence on China. As part of the "clean network" plan, it also restricted the supply of products to Huawei, China's largest technology company, and restricted the use of Chinese cloud computing providers. For example, the United States regarded Alibaba Group Holdings as a security risk.
